BROOKS, JOHN {ESQUIRE}; b. c1806, NC – d. 4/13/1881 Linn Township at
home on old Groves farm, Dent Co.; s/o _ & Nancy (b. c1884 NC living
Shannon Co. 1850 with her dau., Lucinda Shirley); John m. Elizabeth
Shirley (d.7/12/1877, bur. Miller Cem.( ch.: Monroe, Nancy Jane (Mrs.
Caleb Miller), John Wesley: m. Ellen Lesley (or Sesley), 1877, Dent Co.,
ch.: Edna & boy (Ellen was a black slave). John requested to be buried
near his negro slaves on the ridge above Max post office & Antioch
School. John was a large landowner and changed his will just before his
death to his little colored boy. Quite a number of negro slaves are
buried on this ridge, some belonging to Holman family; the ridge divides
2 prongs of the Meramec River headwaters.
