I remember a huge hole in the ground before the "s" curves on highway 19, and was told it was an old flooded mine. I am curious about the history of that abandoned mine. Or was it a sink hole? Does any one know?

Surnames: WAIT (or WAITS or WAITE)

Posted: 25 Sep 2007

I have an Waits ancestor Thomas WAIT (or WAITS or WAITE) b. about 1830 in PA. He is listed in the 1880 census for Linn township, DENT Co., Missouri . Here is what the index’er transcribed:

1880 United States Federal Census

Name: Thoas Weight
Home in 1880: **Linn, Dent, Missouri **
Age: 43
Estimated birth year: abt 1837
Birthplace: Pennsylvania
Relation to head-of-household: Self (Head)
Spouse's name: Jane
Father's birthplace: Pennsylvania
Mother's birthplace: Pennsylvania
Neighbors: View others on page
Occupation: Laborer
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Household Members: Name Age birthplace
Thoas Weight 43 b. 1837 PA
Jane Weight 44 b. 1836 PA
Mary Weight 22 b. 1858 Ohio
Lee Weight 20 b. 1860 Ohio
Alton Weight 17 b. 1863 Ohio
Cata Weight 16 b. 1864 Ohio
Lisey Weight 13 b. 1867 Missouri
William Weight 10 b. 1870 Missouri
Oren Weight 2 b. 1878 Missouri

I know the “Weight” surname is Waits in this case – it could also be Wait or Waite. The children born in or before the 1870 census for Phelps Co. “match” the above 1880 list. Thomas Waits was in Phelps Co, MO in the 1870 census living two townships away from his brother John F Waits. Thomas moved from Phelps Co to Dent Co. between 1870 and 1880. I can not find Thomas or his wife Elizabeth Jane Waits (Maiden name unknown) after the 1880 census. I would like any information about them and their 7 children before or after 1880 in Dent Co. (death records, birth records, marriage records, family files, etc.) .

Any help very much appreciated.

My GGrandfather Nelson, William Caroll and Hobson, Nancy C were married 4 Aug 1870 by Hotchkiss, Marvin (Rev) in Dent County MO. From this union was born six children. James B, Edward, Lela Jane, my grandmother b 6 Jan 1875 Salem, Dent Co; MO, Wesley N, Betty and Walter.

As you can see I have my grandmothers birth but am having a hard time finding her other siblings birth date. I do know that grandma's brother Edward is the Grandfather of Edward Sheffield Nelson of Arkansas, and I don't know his Fathers name, I only know he married a Saddler or Sadler.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely Mrs. Lela D. Pollock- Ernsberger

I am seeking the death date and place of burial for Franklin Plank, who lived and probably died in Dent County. He was the s/o John Wesley Plank and Margaret Jane Blaylock. Franklin married Tabitha Jane Powell, d/o William J Powell and Mary Anna Peck, in 1888. It appears that Franklin died 1900-1910, prior to the 1910 census.

I have a John Merriott Dunn who died 04 Dec 1848 Dent Co., MO. He was born 1815 in AL or TN to William Wesley and Elizabeth Merriott Dunn.
That is absolutely all I know of him.
Would there be any kind of records that I could search to try to find information about him? Would there be a tax record or such. I need to know if he was married and such.
I believe his mother Elizabeth Dunn was living in Dent County in 1870 but I do NOT know if she was there in 1848 when he died.
I am really trying to research a George W. Dunn b. 1844 in either TN or MO (shown both ways on later census records) that I believe to be a grandson of the Elizabeth Dunn found in Dent County in 1870. I just thought the John M. Dunn might be his father as I know he was the son of the Elizabeth Dunn.
The George W. Dunn could also have been the son of a brother to the John M. Dunn, George J. G. Dunn b in TN and NOT found in MO census ever. So I really have nothing to go on.
The George W. Dunn married in Dent County in 1871 to Harriett York, but on the marriage record the surname was spelled DINE in one record and DUNE in one record.
That is the only reference to my George W. Dunn in connection to Dent County as being married there; and that is the only record of the John M. Dunn as dying there and the Elizabeth Dunn was on census records in the county.

If you have any clues for me to research, please contact me: dbton@yahoo.com

I had the pleasure to camping last weekend at Whispering Pines Campground at Jadwin. We rode horses out of the campground along the river and were told of an old schoolhouse and hospital near a springs. Could you provide us with some information about these early structures and some of the settlements in that area?
Thanks much!

On the 1870 Dent County Census, Meramac Division there is George Hutson, Wife Nancy. George was born in Scotland, Nancy in N.C. The children are Elihu, Eli, Adam, Lucinda, Hiram and C.S. I found all but Adam on the 1880 Short Bend Township, Dent County Census. According to World Family Tree, Adam married Sally unknown last name. Maggie was born in 1879 to Adam and Sally and later Alta was born. Maggie married John Snow in Dent County Aug 1, 1896. My grandmother Alta Bell Snow was born Aug 22, 1897. John Rueben Snow was born in 1901. John Snow died 1901-1903. I found the family John, Maggie and Alta on the 1900 Census in St. Francois County. On the 1910 Crawford Census Maggie is married to William Gahr from Germany. They have 3 children, Cyrus, Everett, and Norene with Charles being from William's first marriage, and Rueben as a step son. Alta was living with a Robert and Mary Sims as a servant.
If there is anybody that has any information about Adam and his wife Sally, or about John Snow please let me know. I haven't found any information about where and how they died or where they are buried.

Any information is appreciated.
Thank you Julia Harding julrispets@cableone.net

The family apparently moved to St. Francois County (Randolph, Desloge, and Farmington).

Any assistance would be appreciated.
